What You Want to Know About Tooth Extractions

You probably know many friends that have had their wisdom teeth removed. You may even have heard stories about a tooth extraction. There are a number of issues that can lead to a tooth extraction becoming necessary, and that can sound like a scary thing. But there’s really no need to be fearful. Tooth extraction is a simple procedure, and one that can often leave you feeling much happier and healthier than before treatment. So if you’ve been delaying a dental visit, for fear of having a tooth removed, it’s time to let go of the fear and instead focus on what you have to gain.

Why Might I Need a Tooth Extraction?

Wisdom teeth are commonly extracted because they can take a long time to fully erupt, and the process is often quite painful for many teenagers and adults. Wisdom teeth, or third molars, also frequently cause alignment issues, as most people’s mouths cannot comfortably hold all 32 of their teeth.

Other common causes for extraction are failed root canal procedures and severely damaged or infected teeth. In any of these cases, extraction may be your best option, though we always advise our patients about all of their options, and tend to favor the most conservative one that is viable in each case.

How Long Does Treatment Take?

The extraction procedure, itself, is quite short. It can also lead to very quick restoration of your oral health. That said, following our instructions for how to care for your mouth post treatment is vital to enjoying a quick recovery. We will discuss these guidelines, in depth, with you prior to your procedure, so you can leave our office confident that you’ll be feeling better, and smiling again soon.

If the tooth (or teeth) being extracted is highly visible, you may also wish to discuss your restorative dentistry options for replacing the missing tooth, and completing your smile.
