Do You Need A Periodontist?

Last week we discussed how to help prevent gum disease. However, if you already suffer from the disease, what are your options? We have a periodontist on our team to help manage minor and advanced cases of periodontal disease. Do you need a periodontist? How do you know if your gums are at risk?

The Warning Signs of Gum Disease

The earliest stage of the disease is inflammation, or gingivitis. In this stage, the issue can be treated and reversed. However, once the disease forms, it is incurable. However, we can help manage it to avoid the onset of the advanced stages, such as periodontitis, which can lead to tooth loss.

Possible symptoms of gingivitis and/or gum disease include:

  • Sore gums
  • Redness
  • Bleeding when brushing and flossing
  • Swollen or receding gums
  • Bad breath

If one or more of these symptoms sound familiar, then please talk to your periodontist today. The doctor can assess the cause and severity of the disease and recommend the most appropriate treatment options.

Scaling and Root Planing

To reverse gingivitis or treat gum disease in the early stages we may suggest a scaling and root planing. Also known as a deep cleaning, the procedure involves using an ultrasonic scaler to remove plaque from the surface of the teeth. We then remove any buildup from the surface of the roots as well. Doing so can stop inflammation and prevent the disease from worsening.

Gum Grafting

Should gum recession due to the disease become severe, we can perform a gum grafting procedure. We can also offer gum contouring to correct recession as well. The option we choose will depend on the severity of your gum recession.
