Cosmetic dentistry is a relatively new field which involves improving the appearance of a person’s teeth, gums, bite, or a combination thereof. While up until recently dentistry was all about keeping your teeth healthy and strong, there were no specific treatments to make your smile more attractive. All of that has changed, however. Today, although The American Dental Association (ADA) does not recognize cosmetic dentistry as a dental specialty, The American Academy of Cosmetic Dentistry (AACD) was founded in 1984 and the American Board of Cosmetic Dentistry (ABCD) provides accreditation in cosmetic dentistry.
The AACD
The AACD is the largest international dental organization in the world and consists of over 7,000 members from more than 70 countries. Members include general dentists, specialists, dental laboratory technicians, corporations, researchers, educators, students, hygienists, and more. AACD Members continue their education by attending lectures, workshops, and advanced, hands-on courses in cosmetic dental techniques, materials, and technology in order to keep up-to-date with all of the advancements in cosmetic dentistry. The sole purpose of the ABCD is to test, analyze, and evaluate the services of dentists and dental lab technicians and provide AACD Accreditation in cosmetic dentistry.
Cosmetic Dental Treatments
There is some overlap between specifically cosmetic dental treatments and restorative dental treatments. While cosmetic treatments are meant specifically to make your smile more attractive, restorative treatments are to fix or “restore” your teeth and/or gums back to health. However, restorative treatments that also improve the appearance of your smile can also be considered cosmetic treatments.
