Gum Disease: Your Questions

Gum disease is a serious problem that, though it results in serious consequences, may be something you do not know much about. Fortunately, we provide treatment to improve your gum health if concerns should arise. In the meantime, we invite you to learn more about what causes periodontal problems and what you can do to avoid them. You’ll be happy to know that by becoming familiar with best practices for keeping your gum tissue in good shape, you have absolutely nothing to worry about. Like most oral disease, gum problems are almost always preventable.

Q&A: Gum Disease

Question: Who gets gum disease?

Answer: Anyone can experience the inflammation and infection associated with gum disease. In some cases, certain patients are more likely to develop gum tissue problems – this is often the case if a patient takes certain types of medication, is experiencing certain medical issues, or is dealing with hormonal fluctuations. However, the main cause is poor dental hygiene.

Question: Can I protect myself from getting gum disease?

Answer: Yes, all patients can enjoy protection again this oral disease by practicing better home care and by visiting us regularly. You see, gum problems occur when plaque – a bacteria-filled substance – sticks to your teeth, which it does every single day. If you clean it off consistently, you are in good shape. However, if you neglect it for as few as 48 hours, it can quickly harden into a substance called tartar that you cannot remove. Brushing your teeth two times a day and visiting us twice a year for dental cleanings will offer exceptional protection.

Question: Won’t my gums just heal on their own? If the disease doesn’t eventually clear up, you can repair my gum tissue, right?

Answer: Your gums cannot heal once gum disease begins. Fortunately, if we detect disease in its earliest stage called “gingivitis” we can usually reverse and cure the issue. Once the problem advances beyond gingivitis, however, we can only treat and control the disease – we will no longer be able to cure you.
