Brushing, Flossing, and Dental Cleanings

We always encourage our patients to schedule a dental cleaning once every six months. However, when it comes to keeping your smile looking lovely and feeling clean and healthy, there’s more that goes into your long-term care than keeping up with cleanings (though these preventive visits are extremely important). For a clearer understanding of how to best care for your smile at home and why seeing us two time a year is so significant, look over the following information. We look forward to seeing you and assisting in keeping your grin in great shape.

Best Brushing

In addition to scheduling dental cleanings to keep your mouth healthy, it is extremely important that you brush daily and appropriately to keep your teeth and gums healthy. First, you will need to purchase a new soft-bristle toothbrush once every three months. You will want to avoid harder bristles because they can damage your enamel – they are no more effective at removing plaque than the soft option. Using fluoridated toothpaste, you should then brush your teeth at least two times a day (once in the morning and again before bed) making sure to thoroughly cleanse every tooth surface.

Flawless Flossing

Want to avoid cavities and gum disease? Between dental cleanings, keeping your smile clean requires you to floss once a day in addition to your twice daily brushing. You should always begin with a long strand of floss – preferably about 1½ feet in length – and then clean between all of your teeth. Rather than just sliding the floss up and down, you should wrap it gently around one tooth, sliding it along the border. Then, repeat on the other tooth for effective plaque removal.

Keeping Up With Cleanings

Your dental cleanings are quite important. During these appointments, we will remove the plaque that you cannot completely remove with your own brushing and flossing (even if you do an excellent job). Fortunately, we only require you to visit us once every six months for successful results.
