Losing all of your teeth can weaken your smile, impact how you speak, and lead to issues with your ability to eat. But to restore function, health, and beauty to your smile, we can secure a full set of dentures. In today’s blog, your Shrewsbury, MA, dentist talks about how we create and secure a full set of lifelike dentures.

The Impact of Edentulism

Total tooth loss, or losing the vast majority of your teeth, could occur due to injuries, advanced decay or infection, or in most cases, the advanced stage of gum disease, known as periodontitis. When you lose so much of your smile, you could be severely limited in your meal options, which deprives you of your favorite dishes and good nutrition. Missing teeth could also strain your jaw joints, leading to painful complications like TMJ disorder. You could also struggle with clear speech or feeling embarrassed in social situations. Without tooth roots to stimulate the jaw, your smile could lose mass and density, gradually breaking down to cause an older appearance. But we can secure a complete smile with a full set of dentures.

Creating Full Dentures

To begin, we will examine your smile to see if you need underlying oral health issues like periodontal disease addressed. We may also need to extract the last few teeth too. We then take detailed digital images and impressions of your bite, which allow us to custom-make your dentures in a lab setting. The prosthetic will contain a compelled row of ceramic teeth, all set in an acrylic base that looks like gum tissue. The ceramic teeth will be shaded to look natural and will be able to support daily bite forces and pressures with ease.

Securing Your New Smile

With removable dentures, your full set of new teeth will be held in place with suction or adhesives, and you will need to take them out at night for cleaning and soaking. These tend to last about 5 to 10 years, requiring replacement as the jaw ridge changes shape.

However, we could also insert multiple dental implants into the jaw, sometimes as little as four per arch, which act like new roots. This stimulates the growth of jawbone structure so you don’t lose mass and density, allowing your new implants to stay in place for decades to come. We then attach the new teeth to them. These will be fixed in place, no need to remove them for maintenance!
