Preventive Dentistry: Breaking Down the Basics

We consistently suggest that our patients visit us for preventive dentistry to protect teeth and gums and surrounding tissues. However, we know that our urgency and excitement is not necessarily enough to convince you to remain dedicated to keeping a six-month appointment two times a year. One of the main reasons we often discover that patients feel a bit hesitant or unconcerned is that they are not fully aware of the benefits or services offered by preventive care. Rather than assume on our part that you know all there is to know, we have broken down the basics. To learn more about what prevention includes, take a look at the following aspects offered at our practice.

Dental Checkups

A dental checkup comprises one portion of your preventive visit. During this time, we will examine your mouth visually. We will also use advanced imaging, such as digital X-rays, to take a look at the detailed workings of your oral cavity. We can detect problems early and monitor your health consistently to keep your smile healthy.

Dental Cleanings

A cleaning is the other portion of your preventive visit. We will use special instruments to remove plaque from your teeth, protecting against tooth decay and gum disease. We suggest cleanings because even with effective brushing and flossing at home, you cannot remove every trace of plaque on your own. A cleaning is completed with a tooth polishing, so your smile feels smooth and has a natural glow.

Bruxism and TMJ Treatment

Are you suffering from jaw pain? You may be dealing with bruxism (teeth grinding or clenching) or TMJ disorder (the poor functioning of your TMJs – or jaw joints). We will look for signs of one or both of these disorders and offer effective, noninvasive treatment, to protect your smile and jaw joints from long-term damage.

Sleep Apnea Treatment

Suffering from daily exhaustion? Are you known as a loud snorer? If diagnosed with sleep apnea, we offer treatment that can help you regain a comfortable night of rest again (every night) for improved daily energy and health.

Ultrasonic Scaling

Patients suffering from gum disease will require a “deep cleaning” also known as ultrasonic scaling. We will use an instrument to remove hardened plaque from your teeth and from beneath your gumline to begin the process of reducing inflammation and clearing infection.
