Dr. Pizzi on Age-Related Dental Myths

Maybe you have heard that only older adults are prone to tooth loss, or that certain age groups are not at risk of developing certain oral health problems. One thing is certain: regular dental checkups and a diligent oral hygiene regimen are important for patients of all ages. For most patients, regardless of age, the recommended daily hygiene regimen includes flossing once daily, brushing at least twice a day, and using a mouthwash that has anti-microbial properties. It also means visiting your dentist once every six months.

Myth: Tooth loss is unavoidable in older adults.

Reality: Tooth loss is not a natural part of aging.

Like most parts of your body, your teeth are built to last—not just for decades, but for your entire lifetime. The vast majority of cases of tooth loss in adults are entirely preventable with excellent hygiene, a nutritious diet, and preventive dental care.

Myth: Tooth loss only affects older adults.

Reality: Even young adults and middle-aged people can lose teeth.

Apart from injuries and accidents, it is still possible for younger adults to lose their teeth to periodontal disease. In fact, gum disease is the most common factor in cases of adult tooth loss, regardless of age. The disease begins as gingivitis, an infection that is most commonly seen in patients who do not practice a recommended hygiene regimen and who do not schedule regular dental exams and teeth cleaning.

Myths: Fluoride and sealants are only for children.

Reality: Adults and teens sometimes benefit from these treatments, too.

Although we most frequently treat children’s teeth with fluoride treatment and dental sealants, some adults and teenagers are candidates for these preventive methods. For example, an adult who is prone to cavities due to a medical condition, such as celiac disease, may benefit from added protection. Fluoride in particular is often helpful for patients whose public drinking water does not contain added fluoride, or for patients who exclusively drink bottled water that has not been fluoridated.
