What Is a Gummy Smile?

A gummy smile is an informal way of describing an uneven display of your gum tissues, which can cause your smile to seem asymmetrical even when your teeth are perfectly straight. A gummy smile can be caused by a number of factors, from an abnormality in your upper lip’s muscles to an excessive amount of gum tissues covering your teeth. To correct a gummy smile, we can utilize a specially-calibrated soft-tissue laser to reshape the gum line and provide a more cosmetically-pleasant outline.

Reshaping Your Smile’s Frame

Gum contouring describes the process of sculpting a more symmetrical gum line around your teeth, perfecting the frame that outlines your smile. Traditionally, the procedure is completed with a scalpel, and you may be required to wear sutures while the tissues heal. By contrast, we use an advanced soft-tissue periodontal laser that allows us to achieve more precise results without the need for sutures. The laser minimizes collateral damage to surrounding gum tissues, and the heat from the laser cauterizes the tissues as it passes over your gums, accelerating the healing process.

How Else Can We Improve Your Smile?

For many patients, uneven gums are not the only issue that affects their smile’s appearance. If your teeth are also stained, crooked, chipped, or otherwise blemished, then we can combine laser gum contouring with one or more other cosmetic procedures to affect a complete smile makeover. The goal will be to create dramatic results while minimizing the number of treatments required, and therefore the number of office visits needed to complete your smile’s transformation. For instance, teeth whitening can brighten your teeth; cosmetic dental bonding and contouring can reshape teeth to match those around it; and porcelain veneers can fix a number of issues at once.
