We like to encourage our patients to take part in the community when opportunity allows. This Friday, November 11, 2016, is Veterans Day, a special day to honor the many brave men and women of the armed forces including the US Army, Navy, Marine Corps, National Guard, Air Force, and the Coast Guard, who risk their lives to protect our freedom. While Memorial Day is to remember, and pay tribute to, those soldiers who died defending our country, Veterans Day recognizes all who served honorably in the military during war or peace. Its primary purpose however, is to pay homage to the living veterans for their courage, bravery, and selflessness when defending our national security.
A Little History
The holiday was first celebrated in 1919 in honor of World War I soldiers. It was called Armistice day and is celebrated on November 11, because that day in 1918 a cease fire or armistice was reached between Germany and the Allied Nations. However, after World War II and the Korean War, the name was changed to Veterans Day. The commemoration originated with President Woodrow Wilson who encouraged Americans to celebrate with parades and public meetings, and to suspend work briefly at 11:00 am, the time that the seize fire was reached.
